Hello there-
I was hoping to get some information on Old English game bantams vs. Dutch bantams. I am trying to decide which route to go and I was trying to compare them in regards to temperment and egg laying. Does anyone have any information? I had searched on the internet and have not come up with any real clear comparisons.
Thanks
Brandie

I think it`s just personal preference. I have old English they have a good temperment and lay pretty much all spring.

Do you want to show them? OEGBs come in far more colors than Dutch (good quality Dutch, anyway--I think, though someone correct me if I'm wrong, that you can get Dutch in different colors from hatcheries, but they have likely been crossed with OEGBs to get those colors). Good quality Dutch in colors other than light brown, cream light brown, blue light brown & blue cream light brown seem to be harder to find. But you have to dub OEGB roosters to show them. When I decided to get some Dutch, the fact that I could show without dubbing was a big plus for me.

I'm sure there are other details to consider, but those two were the two big "pluses" on each side for me. Cool colors in the OEGBs, no dubbing in the Dutch. I now have a pair of Dutch (& an incubator full of eggs!), and while I love to look at the OEGBs at the shows, I'll probably stick to the Dutch. I can't really compare personality for you because I've never owned OEGBs, but I hear that they are friendly & easy to handle. My Dutch certainly are. They are very friendly, outgoing, interactive birds. More like pets than livestock! My hen will jump into my hand when I reach into their cage. My rooster is always "talking" to me. They are very entertaining & full of personality!

My Dutch hen doesn't lay like a production hen, but I wouldn't say she's a terrible layer, either. I get about 3 to 4 eggs per week from her.

Have you checked out the OEGB & Dutch bantam breed threads here in this forum? They may be a good source of information, too. I don't know about the OEGB thread, but the Dutch thread is a good one and Pathfinders, the BYC member that started the Dutch thread, is a director for the Dutch Bantam Society & is very helpful if you have questions.
