Our EOGB, Andromeda, is hatching our first grandchickies today... the question we have is this - her nestbox is in the coop about 3' up, there is a row of them and two doors that close to keep them warm in the winter, ec. There is a ramp with little 1 x 1's - I remember our first chicks a year ago (Andromeda and her gang) we kept them in the house for about three months but these little guys have the pleasure of having a real chicken for a mom. We had to teach them to go up the ramp at sunset, my patient husband did this and they caught on quickly (OK some were a little slow) but with these tiny, teensy babies - what will Andromeda do? Will they be able to follow her up the ramp and will they be safe going down? My hubby is putting some 4" thin siding stuff on the edge of the ramp on both side so at least they won't fall off but they can still tumble down.
Also we are in southern Oregon and the afternoons have been sorta nice but the mornings the lawn is soaked - I am thinking we should keep them in the coop for a while so they don't get wet on cold mornings.
Anyone with some advice? I can be home all day, no worries, so I can watch and help as needed.
Thank you!!!
Anna, Guy and the gang
