# of eggs needed to sit?

how many eggs have to be in a nest before the hen will sit on them?

We have 17 in one nest already, not sure if they are sitting on them.

Hen will go broody when she chooses, I've never had a hen go broody just because she had a nest. Guineas, peafowl, sure, but I think chickens are different.

You might wanna wait till one goes broody or invest in an incubator

Yes, please gather and use. Broodiness has been breed out of most domestic hens these days. When you have a broody hen, she won't leave the nest but once a day and then for only a short period of time to eat and poop.
