Oh boy. Big trouble..............

I wouldn't feed them off the porch, but if you have a decent sized property, feeding them away from the house and coop could be a reasonable option. The trouble with any kind of pest is that they only dwell where conditions are favourable for them. Killing one family of coons is not going to get rid of the problem, others will come. I for one have a LOT of cats around. My neighbors have a LOT of cats. I'm sure some coons have made their way down here, but the competition for food and space is just too great, so they keep moving.

Gee, funny how it's okay for people to be sarcastic and judgmental when somebody DOESN'T want to kill an animal, but not when somebody DOES want to kill that animal. Hmmmmmm.....

Well dear Doc, if you look further into the thread youll also note that I admire our gal for her peacenik position. The fact that I don't share it completely on the topic of preds means we have a difference of opinion, thats all. I express mine as you noted.
How boring would it be if I just said: "Oh. Okay," to her comments. Or worse: "WEEEEEE CHICKENS!

It's all good. I asked her if we could still be friends and she said yes. We've made up.

I'm a big fan of differing opinions, as you may have noticed.

But it would be great if BOTH sides could show some respect, and not just ONE of the sides.

Hey, everybody gets their shot - however it comes. No one knows that as well as you.
Read on back aways in the thread, Doc.

BTW, if you look around there is a horrid little thread somewhere were I am, essentially, the butt of all the jokes.
It's all good. Mosey on over there and take a few swipes at me.

No racoons again last night. Dog and cat food not touched, except by the cats that is....

It has been 3 nights that they haven't touched the food OR my chickies.

I also want to say that I recognize that not everyone has the set up I do. Our horses and goats are right next to the chickens. So they act to some extent as a deterent, I think. Plus we have tons of plant life, fields, ponds, streams, woods and wildlife for predators to live off of. I think that is why our garbage has NEVER been raided in all the time we've been here.

Edited to keep on topic.

Contrary to popular belief, Davaroo (the evil twin of Elderoo) and I get along marvelously. Why are those two always so dang grumpy?

Okay, so here is the list of animals on the farm we feed. 3.5 horses (.5 is a 30" mini), 2 cocker spaniels (we lost our beloved 3rd about 6 months ago), 4 cats plus a few feral in the barn (we lost 2 others this year), 3 goats (I am hoping for a few milkers next year), 15 chickens (with 26 in the bator that were happily cookin' as of last night, and a bouncing bevy of baby racoons.

Yep, bandits, coons, rockies, varmits, whatever you wanna call 'em, we are feeding them. They eat organic fosters smith puppy food. They were gone for about 4 or 5 nights, but came back and only eat their gourmet kibbles. I moved our cat food to the feed room, and for whatever reason they don't go in there. I have gone out many nights trying to catch a picture, but so far no go.

Why are we feeding those critters such expensive food? Well, it was free. The rehab couple brought us alot of it. They got a donation and wanted to make sure we had plenty to keep the coons happy until they go on their merry way.

So far, this "experiment" is peaceable. The lovely rehab folks stopped by yesterday just to make sure all is well. They keep assuring us that the coons will depart at one point and will stay away from our flock as long as they are fed. They are locals, in their late 60s who have hunted, trapped and then became rehabbers. Who am I to argue with them? So we shall see.....

MOMENTARY OFF TOPIC POP BACK
Its true. Jen and I are living proof that you can be at odds in opinion and still not quibble or have to have the last word. We dont care who's right - we like each other anyway.

Glad to hear your little science project is going so well, Jen.

You are now returned to your regularly scheduled discussion.
