I was putting my baby chicks into the coop last night, they are about 4 1/2 weeks old, yes I told them they all needed to start being chickens and couldn't stay in the house anymore. They were find, UNTIL, I was swooshing them to go into there coop, when Ricky ran underneath my foot. YES, I stepped on his head, omg, I can't believe I had done this, my heart was pounding.... he was screaming and running around, trying to get away, but to make matters worst, my jack russel seen the excitement and grabbed him.... Of course, I YELLED at the dog and grabbed poor Ricky. He was just screaming in my hands, I covered his eyes because I didn't want him to go into shock or have a little heartattack or whatever. I'm sooo scared that I have done permanent damage to him. Last night also once things settled down, I noticed a little bit of blood on the side of his head, he seems to be doing OK, not showing any signs of pain, eating normally, drinking normally, nor did was their any swelling to his head. I checked on him this morning and he was up and walking around, running into the smaller chicks. But I could beat myself up for being so darn careless... Is there anything I should be watching? How long do you think I should keep Ricky in the house before it's safe again to go back outside.. I perfer to be shot in the head, make it quick and painless...

How bout we step on your head too!! Only kidding. I would have been freaking out all the same. It is so hard sometimes when they are all scurrying around and sometimes even when you are oh so careful it still happens. I would say just keep an eye on him and if he continues to act fine then let it be. I would put him with his other buddies as long as there is no fresh blood on him. I think he would be more comfortable that way than being alone.

Oh, don't beat yourself up over it.....It's not like you stomped on his head intentionally. If he seems fine, just but him out with the others, because chicks really don't like being alone.

Believe me, I've had a few chick accidents myself, so I know how you feel.

I've stepped on a chick before. Feels awful. Unfortunately, mine didn't survive. Just makes ya wanna curl up and cry.

I squished one with the 7 lb feed bucket the other night and I had no idea until I went to feed them the next day and found him dead under there. Things just happen. I felt bad for the poor lil guy but I have lots more. Don't be too hard on yourself.

It happens to all of us, sooner or later. Don't feel horrible, it's another lesson in the school of hard knocks.

However....... I recommend the dog not be allowed around the chicks. That's tempting fate!

Right now he isn't alone, he's in the house with 14 smaller silkies, in fact I think they think he's there mommy because they are snuggling underneath him, He's been laying his head on them. Last night he wasn't moving much, but this morning, he was up and running into the smaller silkies. That would be a horrible, horrible tragic death, to be stepped on by someone. He must think, I'm a giant, the sad part is they wouldn't come out of there coop unless I stood by the door, almost like they felt secure that I was there. Now, I have ruined the security.. I just can't beleive it. The way he was screaming, the noise keeps running through my mind. It was sooo horrible.... I thought for sure I had broken his little neck...

Actually the dog is usually very good, we have cats that are very curious and he will chase the cats off, if they get to close to the little guys...
