Crowing
I just now found a juvenile grey squirrel trapped in my baby chick garden and it about tore both the place to shreds but almost got my littles, too!
Unlike the other posters awful experience with an outright attack on her chicks this squirrel was grey but upon my approach it panicked and was tearing up and down the run in panicked terror, looking for an easy escape (which of course there isn't one, by design) and ran over two of my chicks in the process!
One has a cut and I've got her inside, calming down in a tote with shavings. I applied antiseptic and once she's settled a little I'll check her again and add some triple abx.
But what.the.HELL? Nearly forty years I've lived here and I've never seen a squirrel lose its mind like that or even given two thoughts about them being around chickens!?!
In this case the threat was born of panic and erratic behavior but still! What are the odds?
My other chick seems okay but shaken up.
We've got to get our all inclusive walk in coop and run finished. I'm a big free ranging advocate but I'd like the option of them having a large, predator secure run for moments just like this one; somewhere I can herd everyone in times of stress, etc.
Add to this the bald eagle making the rounds and the effing stray cat my cat keeps throwing down with and I'm at my wits end today!
