A Silkie is a breed of chicken that has feathers that are a lot like hair. Silkie feathers lack the connecting barbs that make normal chicken feathers smooth and held together. This results in fluffy, extremely soft plumage. While the Silkie is most known for having silkied feathers, other breeds of chickens can have silky feathers, too.

Frizzled feathers curl up and back towards a bird's head, instead of laying flat and pointing towards the tail. Any breed of chicken can be frizzled, but the most commonly frizzled birds include Polish and Cochins. There is also one breed of geese, the Sebastapol, which is frizzled.

If two Frizzles are mated together, a percentage of the offspring will be excessively frizzled. The feathers on these birds, called Curlies, will be very brittle, and will often break off, leaving the bird practically naked. Therefore, it is often best to cross a Frizzle with a smooth feathered bird to avoid producing Curlies.
