After losing 120 GG eggs midway of the hatch to power failure, I'll reach lockdown for 94 Bobs (half GG - half Northerns) tomorrow night. I'm wondering if I was as concerned about the well being of my 4 kids at their birth as I am these dedgum birds!! My real concern is the first hours/days in the brooder. They'll be in a 4' x 4' x 2'(high) cardboard box with layers of paper towel in the floor, a hinged wire top, and a heat lamp shining down through the wire with a dimmer switch in the circuit to help control the temp, and a digital thermostat to control temp. This is in the utility room where the temp is fairly controlled.

All I can do is hope.....

GOOD LUCK! I am on day 19 now and awaiting to see little chickys in the hen nests asap. I am waiting for bantys and GG as well. This is my first ever quail hatching. I ordered the GG eggs when my first hen decided she was going to set. Well, 19 days later here I am with my toes, fingers, arms, legs, and tonsils crossed lol. I hope that we make good from this hatching. Good luck to you keep us posted!

YEP! She works hard too! Her name is momma. She is a determined sitter. It is said that a chicken doesnt care where the eggs come from, if they set them and hatch them they belong to them. think of the ugly duckling lol.

Wow!!! I would have thought I had already read where somebody had done that on here, as much as I've read on this forum. Oh well, this place is never-ending in information. To heck with buying a book on how to raise poultry..........BYC is the BOMB as far as I'm concerned when it comes to "how-to" info.

By the way, it must be nice to have "Nature's" incubator at work hatchin' off you quail...

No Maintenance Required!!!!

Yeah the hens will usually take any eggs you put under them the problem is as it has been said here a tons of times, the problem is when they acutally hatch, its reccomended that you remove the little birds from under the hen mainly cuz of illnesses and viruses the chicken can pass onto to game birds, and also because game birds, in this case quails behave in a totally different way than chicken chicks do and sometimes cuz of that there easier pray to predators cuz the hen cant take care of them correctly.

Tho this is true, we have only a small number of bantys and take excellent care of them. Under normal conditions i agree that leaving them in after they hatch is a bad idea but we sort of go with the flow on that. We have a special nest set up with screen wire extenstions on our nests so that the quail cannot be eaten or injured also we have back up ready to go if we need to remove any biddies
