Okay Silkie people... what exactly am I looking for?

Looks like you guessed right. I would say that girl c is a girl, but that could change.

Looks like you have the 2 groups right. They are very nice by the way. I love Girl A and Boy C. Girl B has some nice tight and high wings doesn't she!!!

HA! That's grass, silly! You Virginians won't know what to do when spring finally hits and you thaw out. That's what the ground is supposed to look like in winter! It is only supposed to be white for approximately 24 hours- long enough for there to be a run on bread and milk at the grocery store and for school to be cancelled for two days.

So I'm holding to having at least two hens out of this lot. This is odd for me. My usual odds would be all male.

Having 50/50 is pretty unheard of around here, so I'm not holding my breath on girl #3. We'll just let her be a happy little surprise should an egg come popping out.

I think I'm keeping Boy A and Boy B. Boy A has a great personality and I like his shape. Boy B has a nice color. He is actually the darkest of the boys and only has blue leakage in his tail. Boy C is really pale with lots of white in his undercoat. His comb is also coming in really red. The other two have a dark mulberry color. If I remember correctly, we are aiming for a nice, dark buff with no black and a dark comb. Plus, I just like those two better. The dark one will become the "heir" and I'll move Boy A into the banty pen to be the "spare".

Girl A has some blue leakage in her tail and wing tips, but all in all is pretty nice. Girl B has some black leakage, but she is by far the darkest of the lot. Girl C... well... who knows if she's even a girl.

I want to try Boy B over both Girl A and B and see what I get. In my perfect world it will dilute the black and blue tips without diluting the darker buff. We'll see.

Girl B is pulling a "high and tight" because she's cold. Poor thing! It's hovering around 30 as the highs right now. The poor chickens are freezing their tushies off. Girl B spent the better part of the day puffed up into a little round ball of fuzz!

Thanks for the confirmation all! It's so exciting seeing them turn into grown up chickens!

I had a breeder tell me the only way he has any luck sexing juvie silkies is by feeling their pelvic bones. He showed me the difference... the males had very pointy pelvic bones that almost touched together... the females were a little less pointy and they were further apart... almost far enough to put my index finger between them. I don't know of this is an accurate method or not but he was right on the money with the ones I bought.

I just posted something similar to this! I have 8 week old silkies and am starting to see differences. Exactly what your pictures look like! Some are more round with much pouffier crests. The others have more spiky crests that don't cover their faces like the others. They way you have yours grouped in the pictures is exactly what I was thinking. Glad I stumbled across this thread! I have two buffs, two splash, 2 blue, 2 black, a blue partridge and a partridge. I also have 5 white silkies that are 2 weeks old. They are so cute. My older ones just keep getting more beautiful! The advice here really helps. Thanks, everyone!
