Hi Y'all,

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I am new to owning my own chickens. After a lifetime of wanting to have a country place where I can be as self sufficient as I can be, it's, Lord willing, finally becoming a reality. One of the first things I've thought about is having a small flock of egglayers. I'm pretty stupid about them, other than Grannie's hens chasing me occasionally when I was a kid, I have little first hand experience. I'm studying though.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah

(3) What breeds do you have?
I'm thinking Australorp

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Drawing and painting, firearms, conservation, free energy.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Well, I'm an old Marine, very patriotic (but angry at our government for trying to infringe on our constitutional freedoms) and not in the mood to debate it because I've been around the block enough times to be convinced. I'm second generation Okie and love this part of the country. Farther south and there's hurricanes, north is too cold, west is earthquakes (you can't hide from 'em), and ease is too full of people. I've been in the computer industry in one aspect or another since I got out of the Marines. Anything else you want to know you'll have to ask. I see governmental and corporate conspiracies everywhere and leery of putting too much personal information in a public forum.

Any information on how to recycle, stretch a buck, bartering, alternative construction is very welcome.

Hello and welcome....so glad you joined BYC

Love your avatar....I know I've seen that picture before somewhere in a book. (now i have to go research it)

Thank you for your military service. It's so appreciated.

Good luck on your search for coop plans and just the right hens. Enjoy those eggs :)

thank you for your years in service. Chicken coops do not have to be fancy just functional. Chickens really don't know the difference. A lot of people on here re-purpose materials to make their coops. Coops made from wooden pallets are a great find. Many of us aren't doing well financially, so there is a lot of advice going round. You could check your local area Craigs list for free and low cost items than can be useful ie., old dog runs, kids playhouses, leftover construction materials etc. Also check if you have a re-hab store.

Hi Ya'll! Thanks for the warm welcome and tips. I love any kind of 'secret' knowledge that makes life easier and cheaper. The avatar is a corruption of Napoleon Crossing the Alps I did in college. If you look closely enough, you'll see me in a ball cap with a pony tail sporting a Olympia beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. I really appreciate the pats on the back for my hitch in the Marines, I'm just glad public sentiment has changed since Viet Nam. Some folks were pretty mean back then, but it was the best thing that happened to me and I value my honorable discharge more than my college degree.
