Hello,
I noticed today that my oldest chicken has a swollen and white eye. She cannot see out of it and it constantly scratching at it/her face. See picture attached.
Is this from old age? None of my other chickens seem to be having any problems. I did put her in a dog crate in the run with food and water. I did notice the other chickens were crowding and bullying her.
There doesn't seem to be any puss either.
Is there anything I can do?
thank you for your responses:)

I would use a warm wet compress on the eye to dissolve any crust or drainage. Clean it out well, and try to get a picture of the white eye. Look for any bubbles in the eye or nasal drainage, sneezing, or crackly labored breathing. Terramycin eye ointment would be good to apply into her eye 2-3 times daily after cleaning any gunk inside. Pus can be unseen and in the sinus. It helps to squeeze it out opif possible. Swollen eyes can be from an injury or peck wound, getting dirt or other material into the eye, and more commonly, a symptom of a respiratory disease, such as MG or coryza.

Thank you for your reply.

Okay, I will try to do that. Do you have any recommendations for doing this on a skiddish chicken? This was my friends chicken which i adopted about a year ago and the chicken wasn't socialized properly.

I also just noticed she has a really poopy but also with white droppings. Could this be related?

The droppings may be related if the hen is dehydrated from not being able to see to get water. Offer water and food up to her beak. Many chickens are flighty, and do not like being handled. At night when they are roosting is a good time to pick them up, examine, give medications, and to separate in a dog crate for ease of furture handling. Having her in a crate with food and water, can help you medicate her and clean her eye. I would offer mushy feed up to her beak, and also water. She may get more used to being handled.

was able to get a short video of the chickens white eye ball. interesting update I found a young chicken dead today in the chicken run. I looked her over and she seemed healthy. I dont know if this is just a coincidence or related to this chickens eye problem.

I also noticed there does seem to be a clear liquid coming out of her eye.

The video does not work for me, and the picture is blurry. Soor about losing the other chicken. If you still have the young chicken’s body, I would keep it cold on ice in a cooler, wrapped in a garbage bag, and contact your state vet tomorrow morning to get a necropsy. The body can be delivered to them or shipped overnight. That is a good way to find out what disease that might be affecting your other chicken. Here is a list of state vets:
