Hi need help. From chicken expert. I had chicken long time. And never had to deal with health promblems. Now I do. Have a old healthy hen who has pale comb why??? And need help with got two hens that lay soft shell eggs I do leave out oyster shells and they do have food that has oyster shells in it which is Leanya food sorry cant spell it

Older hens can have problems with soft or thin-shelled eggs, even if they get plenty of calcium. There may be an underlying problem with her shell gland. If there has ever been a mild case of infectious bronchitis in the flock, and sometimes it may be so mild you may not notice it, that can also cause problems with thin egg shells. My hens prefer crumbled egg shells to oyster shell which they tend to ignore. Hopefully, it is just something to do with their age. Sumi has a good article called, "Common Egg Quality Problems" that has a lot of good info about egg shells. You can Google it or do a search here on BYC.

Bronchitis is a respiratory infection. Sometimes a flock can have it with very little symptoms, and it can affect their reproductive tract, especially the shell gland, I think. The shell gland is where the hen’s body creates a shell around the egg. This is by far the longest part of the egg producttion process. This yesr acouple of my pullets were sneezing for a coupke days with no other symptoms. Someone was laying eggs with very thin, fragile shells around the sane time. I wondred if a mild case of infectious bronchitis was hitting my flock at that time. They never required treatment and everyone seems healthy now.
