After years away from enjoying a forum on chickens, it took rejuvenating my flock with new chicks this week to get me back on-line. Years ago I was a member of MyChickens.com and was disappointed when it disappeared into cyberspace.
I'm hoping to find several old friends here and look forward to making some new ones.
I've had a henhouse for 10 years. My husband's family used to raise chickens and sell eggs back in the early 50s. We have enjoyed RIR, Leghorns, Minorcas, Wynnedot, and a few Coquin featherfeet in the past. We have incubated many times in the past.
Since we were down to six hens and two roos, I decided to try hatching some collected eggs from our 3 RIR, 1 Minorca and a white cross. Either hatchability was affected by the age of the hens or the cold weather, because we only had two hatch.
To Atwoods I went and there found lovely chicks: Black Australorp, New Hampshire Red, Barred Rock, Ideal 236 Leghorns, Black Minorca, and two little feather feet that I think are Black Langshans. I purchased 10 Aussie pullets and a straighrun mix of the others and a few straightrun Aussie (hoping for a roo to go with a harem). Hubby didn't even raise an eyebrow over the 43 new babies.
All are tucked nicely into a clean water tank with a 250 watt heatlamp and the lonely two are in feather heaven.
Besides the chickens, my hubby runs a cattleranch with his brother.
I have a few lovebirds and we have two dogs and two cats.
A flock of wild Canada geese call our ponds home and come up for scratch each evening.
I look forward to reading and re-learning and visiting with other people who are just as fascinated by chickens.
