Hi, my hen who is around 8 years old is moulting and it's taking a really long time. Last year it took literal months for her to finish. Another hen I have (also around 8 years old) started her moult after she started and has already finished. I posted about her before having lumps in her neck and she also seems to have an ear infection :(

Under her vent is the worst part for ingrown feathers, in the pic the yellowish part under the vent feels like a mass of feathers under her skin. There are also other feathers I can see growing under her skin in other areas of her body.

She seems to be unable to reach anywhere past her chest to preen, and she can't reach her oil gland either so I have to clean it occasionally or it gets very dirty.

Edit: added another pic where you can see the shape of a feather growing under her skin

Can you use St Ives scrub on her bum morning and night? This will help to exfoliate so the feathers can be exposed.

Why can't she reach her oil gland?
Would something like that work for chickens?

I think the lumps in her neck are causing her to be unable to reach it, she tries to but she can't. I also just noticed today that she holds her neck in an S shape all the time so I'm giving her some extra vitamin E now :(

Yes it would work, since she's molting I wouldn't recommend a bath since it would be stressful, but the scrub would exfoliate a little bit of skin gently and allow for the feathers to come through. I would also give her b complex tablets in addition to vitamin d.

Oops sorry I meant vitamin E, and okay thank you, I've given her a general vitamin supplement in her water and separated her for now.
