I have a young olive egger hen that we bred in the spring (Silver Cuckoo Marans rooster, Snowy Easter Egger hen). This week she laid her first egg, and it was a lovely pale olive color. Day two, she laid another egg (saw her in the box shortly before), same size, but very blue. A beautiful blue, but not the same color as the first. My pic isn't great without natural light this evening. The eggs are a bit more vibrant and jewel tone in person. I know the shell color comes from the blue gene, and the brown is an outer coating... but it seems like she has lost the coating completely in one day? The egg on the left is the same egg in both pictures. It's next to today's egg in one, and next to one of our cuckoo marans eggs in the other.

First… are you sure the same hen laid both eggs?
That being said, in my experience with my OEs and EEs the egg color varies from day to day. Especially with the new layers. I have five colored layers, two EEs and three OEs, and some days I’ll get all blue eggs. Not an olive one is sight. The eggs are a baby blue too. Some days I’ll get three blue and two olive. I’m not sure if others have the same experience with their colored layers but I know my girls always lay eggs a variety of colors.

I’m certain it’s the same hen. I saw her in the box, and the other three hens we are waiting to get first eggs from are Wyandottes and salmon favorolles. It’s the same blue as my snowy EEs but very tiny and the same shape as the previous day’s olive egg. This is my first OE though, so I was surprised by the big shift. I guess I expected a gradual shift. Can’t wait to see what happens with her this week.

Any updates on egg colors!
I have a few EE'S myself and am always interested in the color of eggs being produced! Mine are currently not of enough to lay yet, they are17 weeks.. So hopefully soonish :)

It was definitely her egg. She is solidly laying an olive egg and hasn't had the weird blue egg again. Also, she is laying more double yolker eggs than any pullet I've had. I think that is in my marans line, as her aunt is also prone to them. Egg at the bottom is her latest giant double yolk egg.

So far, my Olive Egger has laid exactly the same color egg in the 12 days in a row that she has laid her first eggs! I posted a photo above with two photos of the hen herself.
