Omega 3 Chicken Forage

I bought 2 lbs. of this for my chickens. From a tip I learned here, I am trying to grow it in two flats and then rotate them for the chickens. I have a greenhouse so I should be able to supply it to them this winter.

Anyone else use it? I am hoping that this will make my eggs very healthy or am I misled?

hmmm...never heard of it.

I do know that free ranged chickens that have access to greens, and bugs, and such are naturally high in omega 3 already...........I'm curious though.

Ours free range on unfenced land so we haven't tried it. I do make sprouts for them w/ oats, wheat, and flax occasionally. If our yokes get any more orange it'll be scary.

For those who've never heard of it, this is what it is:

"Consists of: 20% Common Flax, 5% Ladino Clover, 5% Birdsfoot Broadleaf Trefoil, 10% Non-dormant Alfalfa, 20% Red Cowpeas, 40% Buckwheat. Plant at 50 pounds per acre or 2—3 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft."

Thanks, Devora. I was going to put the ingredients down if anyone was interested. It didn't seem they were, so I forgot all about it.

It has not sprouted yet in the flats. I am hoping they like it.

This sounds very interesting! CAn you let us know how it goes? it sounds like you are sprouting the seeds in seedling flats, is that right? Is it cold where you are? ARe you sprouting them indoors?

Our girls are still eating lots of grass (and all my Hostas!

) and their yolks are bright orange... but I do wonder how we'll manage greens come winter.

Hi Stacey,
It is not like the midwest or eastern US. It gets down to the 20's in the winter time.

I built a greenhouse this summer and that is where I have the flats. I intend to rotate them as someone here suggested and the girls will have fresh greens.
