SO many many months ago - probably July or August last year, I found this BIG FAT orange caterpiller walking in our garage..... I called the kids to show them, and we put the worm in a bucket with some grass/hay etc.... to watch.

Well the darn worm went straight into a cocoon type stage and that was it! The bucket has been on the shelf in the garage, I didn't want to dump the poor thing, so through bitter freezing -30 snow etc... that thing stayed in a bucket.

Every now and then the kids see the bucket and wanted to have a look, so I'll bring it down and we'd look at that ugly brown blob.

Well, today my son said lets look at the worm, I took the bucket down and................

That is so cool!

Years ago when I was in elementary school I was taking my dogs for a hike through the woods near my house. I walked through this field and saw all of these weird cocoons in the grass. I collected about 20 of them and brought them home. I put them in a flower pot on the back patio and completely forgot about them.

A few months later our backyard was SWARMED with LUNAR MOTHS! It was SO NEAT!!

That is a great experience for your kids! Don't let the chickens catch him!

that's really neat. my son did something similar but forgot about them. heard something in his room and looked in the tub and he had huge moths. yours is much prettier!

If I would have found that worm wriggling in my garage, I would have fed it to my chooks

How smart to let it "do its thing" and turn into a gorgeous winged beauty like that

My three little girls are sooo jealous!

Lucky worm - I only got my chickens in August!

I'm still shocked we actually LOOKED in that bucket right at that moment, I mean it could have happened last week and it would have just flown away, the silly butterfly picked a real windy day to come out. I would have moved it to a tree or something, but its WAY too windy!
