On raising meat birds

What kind of milk goats do you have? I raised commercial dairy goats for years and found some goats give very good milk and some don't. Nubians usually give very good milk. Toggs are iffy. Nothing can beat Jersey milk though. I had to give up my beautiful Jerseys. It about broke my heart. I miss them.

Thanks. I'll look up the FR, 12 weeks is fine. As soon as we seperated our mutants (cornish) from the layers the mutants took off (weight and size). Despite thier health problems they were yummy...

Personally if I was you, and I just wanted to put meat in the freezer for me and my family.... I would go with the cornish x's. Like Jaku said... they are super easy to do. And honestly a batch of 25 twice a year should feed you and your family if you eat other meat.

If you dont want to but meat or eggs, I would suggest White Plymouth Rocks (they cross them with cornish for a reason). The boys get big quick, and the girls lay eggs near every day (mine lays 6 a week, about). If you are looking for a dual purpose bird that is great at both meat and eggs, I would go with white rock and harvest at 16-20 weeks.
I heard that it is important to brine the birds before eating. I say go for it.
Also, White Rocks breed true!

Thanks everyone.

GraceAK- thanks. That sounds great, I will add some to the order I placed last night.

cassie- I have Nigerians. I've been wanting some Nubians but haven't found any that I like. I'm pretty particular. The milk was good but so SWEET it was like drinking a mixture of water, sugar and vanilla. I'm excited for my Jersey girl to grow up and freshen. I know it will be a long time. In the meanwhile I buy organic milk from the grocery.
