We have a trip to San Antonio planned for May, when our chicks will have been outside for several weeks and a trip to Disney World for a week planned in October.

When you go away who watches over your chickens?

My friend/neighbor checks in on them for us. It's nice to have fellow chicken-keepers for friends!

My mother in law does the feeding of our animals for us when we are away, she sometimes stays at our house while we are gone because of having to open the coop in the morning and closing it at night, we also have a cat and 2 guinea pigs. She doesn't seem to mind looking after them for us, but we don't go away very often.

My father is down the road and he does most things. My back up caretakers are kids from 4H and FFA. I pay them to do it. If it is for more than one day, I have two of them do it: one for a.m. care and one for p.m. care.

It's important to find a couple of people and do it early. Kudos to you for starting now.

My neighbor takes care of things for us. I make sure to have as much as possible automated and where that is not possible I double up on water and feed containers to help keep things easy. We watch their critters while they're on vacation too. I LOVE having great neighbors!!!
