Well, we are one big happy family! I told everyone back in mid January how I was putting my two flocks, 4 weeks apart in age; together in the run. They were all sleeping together in the coop. The 'big' girls on the roosts; and the 'little' girls in the lower nesting boxes.
I put a 'playpen' between them in the run. The little girls would wait in the transfer chute until I open the playpen around their water & feeders. Then they ran to the food and happily began their day!! The older group was in plain sight, sometimes one of the leghorns, certain that the food behind the wire was better---would fly up and into the area. In fact, the 'runt' of the leghorns spent a lot of time with the 'littles'!
Without the playpen the leghorns, the big girls, would stand at the opening of the chute and not let them outside!
This went on for about three weeks. Some mornings I wouldn't get the playpen opened right away......so if anyone was hungry, they had to stand up for themselves! And they did !!!
It is a wonderful feeling to know that when allowed; God's creatures can work it out.
I am grateful that the information gathered here gave me the tools to use my common sense and my animal sense to get my chicken love underway!!
