Hi all! We have 7 chickens in total, four of which are chicks that have been free with the big chickens since they were eggs.
It seems that our chicks have decided to start establishing their pecking order (they’re 9 weeks old now). I’ve seen them facing off to each other a few times, but then today I got home and one chick has the back of her head all torn up!
Trying not to worry too much because I know some fighting is natural but it’s the first blood I’ve seen on any of our birds so wondering at what point I should intervene and separate, or if this degree of scrapping is normal.
The chicken that has the freshly bared head is acting totally submissive and subdued, and I’m pretty sure it’s the cockerel chick we have who did it to her because I saw him give her another peck in the same spot!
At what point should I separate?
Thanks!
Rob

They’re about to go into the coop for the night, so I’m wondering if it’s okay to let them go to bed like normal but then be prepared to separate the bully rooster into a dog crate in the corner of the chicken yard for the day when I let them out tomorrow

If it's just one bully separate the bully. If injured one is getting pecked by more than one you need to separate her from the flock until she heals.
Yeah I’m keeping an eye on them now and the only one I’ve seen bother her is the one bully chick. Thinking tomorrow when I let them out in the morning I’ll put him in a dog crate in the shade
