We got 4 chicks today (hatched yesterday) and one of the buff orpingtons has a hard brown lump crusted onto her belly. Is it her umbillical cord stump? I can see her vent, by her tail, opening and closing and looking fine, just like the others, but what is the stumpy thing stuck on her belly? And do I need to do anything about it?? I kinda tried to wipe it off with a warm wet cloth, or just pull on it a bit, but its really stuck on there and i didnt want to hurt her so i stopped. PLEASE HELP!

Don't worry too much about that. Leave it alone, don't pick it off or anything, and just keep an eye on it. She'll be fine.

It's part of the yolk sac. Leave it alone. There are threads about unabsorbed yolk sacs. I had this happen to one of mine Orp too. I actually took the chick to the vet for a repair (long story).

ok, thank you! will it just fall off on its own?
she seems to be acting fine, ive just read about the clogged vent and wanted to make sure it wasnt something like that....

It's a little herniation and I think it's kind of one of those things that kind of depends on how big the hole is. Unless you are a vet surgeon that is going to close up the body wall, really it's mostly about keeping it clean and not getting picked by other chicks. The vet said only to use saline if the area needed cleaning. Yours looks like it doesn't have any open wound so I wouldn't aggravate it. Im not a vet and theyd probably say better to bring it in for a check to be safe but that is not always a realistic option. The vent is the other pinkish hole. That one looks good from your pic. The best description I've read is that it should "wink" at you.

THank you CaCO3!
It doent seem open or weepy or soft at all, and i havent sen any of the other chicks take notice of it, so i will leave it alone for the night and see how shes doing in the morning.
Thank you all so much!
