Can you tell I'm a punny one, too?
Howdy! I'm a freelance writer and fiction author living in the Southern Tier of New York, Allegheny mountains. I'm trying to slowly build a small homestead. Finally was able to buy chicks this year. The past two years here unexpected expenses came up so we didn't want to buy any without being able to provide for their needs.
This Easter my husband surprised me with 8 light Brahma chicks and 2 Pekin ducklings. We fell in love with them all right away. My husband is a born and bred city boy, I'm an ex-farm girl, but I've never had any chickens other than Barred Rocks, Leghorns, and Easter-Egger bantams. The ducks were a real shock, we had wild mallards on the farm back home in NC (where I grew up), but I never had my own!
Today we're down to 1 Pekin, a dog got into the pen back in early May. Still have the 8 Brahmas and pretty sure it's 3 cockerels with 5 hens. There's one that I'm not 100% sure on, hoping I don't end up with an even split, but the 'hen' could be a slow to comb cockerel.
I plan on getting more chickens, probably light Brahmas as this breed is so sweet. Definitely will be adding a few more ducks, not sure if I want only Pekins as the brown types are cute, too.
