I have raised waterfowl for over 25 years- but only got an incubator last August. So after a couple of months incubating duck eggs I was given two silkie eggs and one hatched a few weeks ago -and it was so cute I thought I would try some more chickens. I bought a dozen eggs- mixed Some RIR , Light Sussex and Austrlorp. Only 5 eggs developed and one has pipped with definite movement in two others... Not sure about the other two...and dont wont to risk opening the bator at this stage to see what is going on. I can see the little beak of a RIR poking through the shell.

I have stayed up half the night watching ducklings hatch.... but for some reason -tonight I just want to go to sleep in the hope I wake up to a surprise in the incubator in the morning.......

Congrats on your pip!

You are right not to open the bator at this point. It would only compromise your hatch, so sit on those hands and do not open the lid not matter what!

Sending lots of good hatching vibes your way!

It Worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to bed early and just got woken up by a noise... Sure enough it was the sound of a newly hatched chicken flopping around the incubator.

First one out is a little Rhode Island Red - hatched 4.45 am Australian time

Another has pipped... At least I have an hour now before i have to get ready to go to work.. I can sit and watch the little guy for a while.

Congratulations! You did the right thing by not opening the bator. Believe me, we learned the hard way over the weekend.

Well little RIR will soon have a friend or two...Another of the eggs has now pipped. That is both the Australorp eggs ...Now if only the two Light Sussex eggs would show some signs of life - I will be very happy.

I know.. Well as much as I would love to take that little one for a quick hold...I am off to work now... So he will just have to sit there peeping his little heart out all day to the other eggs. Hope he has some friends soon. -but at least while I am at work- I am not temted to open the bator to check those last two eggs......

I will take some as soon as get home from work....When I can open the bator to get the little guy out....

I actually wish I had a web cam now... So I can see what is going on at home today.... Maybe I will duck home on my lunch break to check on the progress.
