I use to do this but it may not be a good idea. I would go to the local bait shop and bring home "goodies" for my babies. Is that okay? It shouldn't hurt them with parasites or anything should it?

I've bought meal worms and crickets as treats. Is that what you're talking about? If so, I certainly saw no ill effects.
