One of my 6 chicks is chirping loudly and breathing heavy. I pushed the heat source back a little and it seems slightly better since 4 AM this morning when it seemed to be over heated. All the others seem to be content running to and fro. It doesn’t have pasty butt. I just checked and it’s clear

Anybody have any ideas on what I can do. It seems in pain

Hi, and welcome to BYC!

How old are your chicks? What is your brooder set up (pics are helpful :) ), and what are you using for a heat source? What is the temperate on the "hot side" and the "cold side"? Sounds like that chick may still be too hot.

Have you seen that chick eat and drink? How about poop?

Sorry for so many questions! But that will help folks get a better idea of what may be going on.

The chicks are a week old and one of them not the chirping one is 2 weeks old. 95 on the hot side and 92 on the cool side. The crop looks a little swollen also. My friend thinks it’s the wood chips. I usually by full grown hens. This is the first time I’ve had chicks in my house

A week old is too young for grit. Might have swallowed a piece of shaving but not likely. Is the bird pooping at all? Eating? Drinking? The loud chirping is distress of some type. I use shavings with mine and never had an issue. Maybe try wetting the feed to a mush and see if they eat it better. Mine love wet food. Could be sour crop but it also seems too young for that. Does the chicks mouth smell really bad?

I have them on a tarp with aspen bedding and surrounded by a brooding box. It is mostly chirping and refused water when I put it’s beak in. I only put the grit because someone suggested it. I opened it’s beak and looked but I didn’t see anything. The area right under its beak looks swollen from the outside compared to the others.

I’ll try wetting the feed
