I have a hen sitting on three eggs and four eggs have already hatched. I came home this evening and one of the eggs is totally gone and no baby chick. The two eggs are still there and the four baby chicks all seem happy. I have her enclosed so one other chickens can get to her. I'm just wondering could she of possibly ate it? I have never heard of that but!!!!!

Maybe she did eat it. Or maybe... what kind of enclosure is mama in? Is it chicken wire? I had a friend who only had chicken wire on his coop in a place near some small wooded area, known for fox, raccoon, skunk, etc. One day, he came out to find that some of his birds (I dont remember if it was one of the pheasant, chickens, pigeons, ducks, or what) mangled right next to the chicken wire on the inside. Something with small arms reached in and grabbed it and ate it through the chicken wire. Could be maybe an egg-eating snake got through the wire and ate one of the eggs before mama chased it off. Sorry for your loss.
