I had the honor of hatching and raising two beautiful, quirky, silly, and happy pekin ducks, Loretta and Whitebeard. They were both female, and turned one years old on Sunday. That morning, Whitebeard had a prolapsed cloaca and after bringing her to an emergency vet, she was fine and I scheduled a visit with her regular vet. Today she had another prolapse and after the vet examined her, she determined she’d be fine, but that we should give her an implant to stop her laying eggs. Happy to have her back, I said go for it, but before they did this she died suddenly. When I got home and let Loretta our of her coop, she was fine but concerned about where her partner was. Suddenly she started wobbling, Uneasy on her feet, falling over, I rushed her to the vet. She’s still there. They didn’t find any metals and are evaluating her for other toxins. I’m absolutely heartbroken. These ducks are not just ducks. They are my babies. I love them so very much. If Loretta makes it, I don’t know what is best to do for her. I’d gladly get her another duck, but the only thing I can find is day old ducks. There are day old Cayugas nearby. Does anyone know anything that can help right now?

I never knew how much I could love ducks, but I can’t even process this pain.

So sorry for your loss. I ended up with an only duck for about 3 months in which I couldn't find her a companion or a new home. I would suggest a mirror and a stuffed toy for now. My girl really perked up with new companions. She now has two ducklings I put in with her at about three weeks old. So if you got day old it might not be long before you could put them together. Every duck is different though and it might take longer. Hope it all turns out ok for your other duck. What does the vet think? Could it be botulism?

Thank you. I will definitely try the mirror and the stuffed toy. She didn’t find anything indicative of what caused this. I’m picking up lorretta in a few minutes. She says her condition has improved a bit. I’ll just have to monitor her and bring her to a mergency vet if need be.
