Good evening everyone!! This is Nadya the Piano Tuner, horse and dog trainer from El Paso. I only make money with pianos. anyway, my 8 and a half week old pullets are now putting themselves in bed at night. Thanks to all of you for your care, I was realizing I was not alone with the dilema of the first night out. You are an amazing group of people and I am very grateful to have met you.
My pullets don't hate me for locking them in the hen house every night. They all come running to me and jump in my lap. My Collie always wants their attention and they know him, but I do not let him worry them during the day.
They do not peck me since I made the sound of an unahappy chicken when they tried to. BRRR!! It really works with my chicks!
Again, thank you for all of your support..

Congrats on your successful Coop Transition! I love the quiet cooing sounds they make on the roost at night. Do you have a recording of the sound you make which stops pecking? Is it a growl?

Wow!!! Thank you for your reply! To make the sound, you have to think Scottish. BRRRRR! You make the b sound with a rolled r after it. Do this with a soprano voice. Not Mezzo just ahigh voice. They get it. If in doubt, just sit in your chicken yard and listen,,,,. you will see how they correct each other with their BRRRR.

WOW I'm out with them a LOT, and don't know that one. Mine are just 6 months and no Broody experience yet - still in the first few weeks of competing for a favorite nest - so maybe they'll develop and use this sound more. Also - maybe I need a hearing aid!! Maybe both!

I am new to raising chikens, but it is so rewarding. I am very grateful to all of you, my new friends, to help me with them. They are doing great at getting in their hen house at sunset, but insist on going in the nesting box. I think I need to block it off. what are your thoughts>

Oh, they are not old enought to be broody, but they can peck with larger beaks than a month ago. So, I saw when they were little chicks, they make a distintive sound when invaded. The chirp is distorted and has a sound like when violin does a fast vibrato. BRRR!! Millie, a Barred Plymouth is the only one who tries to experiment with pecking my hand. The others, a Barred and 2 Red Sex Links don't do it at all. I am not very good with computers so it may be a challange to send an audio. Ihope I can at least help someone out there. I am very happy to be a part of this community!!!

You will need to block off the nest boxes until you can get them trained to use the roost bar. Stuff an old pillow or towel in the boxes. Make sure the roost bars are accessible, no steep climbs or anything. 2x4s with the 4 side up make great roost bars. In the evening physically place them in the bar and keep putting them back on as the jump down. Turn out the lights quickly once they are all on, generally chickens don't move much in the dark. Keep this up for a week and they should learn after that.
