Only one hen laying - WHY?

I have 3 hens purchased in March 2011 from TSC. I would assume they are all relatively the same age, give or take a day or two. One has been laying since middle of July, as expected. She is a RIR. The other two show no interest at all! One is an EE and the other is a Silky. Why would only one lay consistently, while the other two haven't even started? I expected the Silky to be delayed in egg laying, but not the EE. What gives???? Any suggestions?

The RIR, Ginger, lays ONE egg a day. IS this common and what is the typical number of eggs a chicken will lay per day?

Thanks!

1 egg per day is normal. There are a few hens out there who manage 2 a day, but that's rare. I'm not familiar with EE's laying habits, but I heard Silkies take a bit longer than usual to start laying.

Your EE is likely a mutt so no telling when it will start. It's not a hard and fast rule and not all breeds/individuals are the same.

Chickens teach us patience?? Yeah, doesn't work for me either.

Good luck. They'll come around.

So....guess what?? Got a very pretty blue/green egg today!! All the other eggs from Ginger have Benn tan/ Brown....think my EE heard we were talking about her?? ! Pics to come...

Yeah, sounds like she got the hint
