Out of my very small flock of 5. Only one hen survived. I am devastated. It all happened so fast early in the morning. Coyote didn’t get in the coop. He hopped over fence when my husband let them out of the coop to free range while he went inside to use the restroom. All within 10mins.

I’m seeking advice on what to do with the surviving hen “Billy”. she is very quiet and almost calm like? My husband heard a bunch of noise and ran out and saw all my other hens dead but Billy was in coyotoes mouth and it dropped her and ran as soon as coyote saw my husband. We love her to pieces. I am not sure if she has any wounds yet, I grabbed her and put her in a dog kennel inside my garage and covered it.

Any advice on what to do for her to make her comfortable? I am trying to figure out if to get more hens or find someone to take her in. But, in the meantime…

Start by offering her some sugar water or, if you have it, water with electrolytes like Sav-A-Chik or Rooster Booster, for shock. Keep her in a dark, quiet place. Check her over good for injuries. Even if you don't see any, she may be bruised by having been in coyote's mouth so she'll be sore, and she may turn green where bruised. Moisten her regular feed if she's reluctant to eat, she needs that more than treats. But you can also offer hard cooked egg yolk for extra protein. Good luck with her. :hugs
