I just found out yesterday that my neighbor is taking in two new roommates - both with dogs! Eeek!
I met one of the dogs yesterday - a 4 year old yellow lab. My girls were free-ranging when they dropped by, but they were in the far side yard, so I'm not sure if he saw them or not with all the excitement of meeting my dog.
The other dog I have yet to meet; apparently she is a miniature dachsund. I might have to lower the bottom wire of my electric fence should she get the urge to dig!
I only free-range when I am home and out in the yard, but I'm still nervous. It only takes once! The last roommate that lived over there had a high prey-drive German shepherd, but that guy worked afternoons and evenings, so the dog wasn't out during the times my girls were. That dog did escape once when someone let him out by mistake - the first thing he did was send my poor cat about 75 feet up into a tree. Happily my dog came out and occupied him while I quickly tossed chickens into the pen.
That was all too much stress for me, wondering where that dog was all the time. I don't want to go through all that again!

Well, if they stopped by that's a good thing. That means the communication lines are open so you can chat with them about your chickens if need be.

Hopefully they'll be very responsible dog owners and you won't ever have issues. But, I certainly understand the 'stress' of always wondering.

I can lend you Slyvester my roo to put that dach. in it's place!!!!!
My best friend has a dach. and Slyvester drools when he sees her. He just loves to torment that poor dog:gig

I'd be more worried about the doxie, because they are bred to chase things. (ugh)

I have a mini doxie and he has gotten 5 of my girls over the years. As long as he can't access the chickens, it shouldn't be too bad.

I'd be nervous too...especially because I know how dachshunds are.

That's what I was afraid of - all the dachsunds I have ever known have been very determined little critters...
