So I just hatched 8 chicks out of my incubator. They were all pipped and zipped within 2 hours of each other and moved off to the brooder. One lone egg had zero signs of hatching. 24 hours later I checked again, and again no signs that I could detect. I did a float test and maybe saw movement but was very unsure. I candled it and maybe saw movement but still, was unsure.

So I did some reading and found that amazing post on assisted hatching. Anyway my son and I decided to open the air cell and peer inside. We did a good job, no nicked membrane, no blood vessels affected, used coconut oil to lubricate. We found the chick inside is alive, not upside down, not shrink wrapped, none of these things to explain what went wrong. So I placed the egg back into the incubator and it’s... a little disturbing. I feel like I should do something more to protect the little guy. Here’s my questions

1. can I improve the chances of survival by making a diy disinfectant? If so, please share recipe

2. has anyone been in this situation and what were the odds of success?

3. how long before bacterial infection takes hold of my incubator?

Please reply if you have experience specific to this situation! Thx!

I feel your struggle. We have been watching this chick hatch for 30 hours. She is ALMOST out of the shell. She is fighting to get out of a very small egg.

Great news! The chick hatched after hours of struggle and is going well. She is almost a day old, so put her in small brooder box with week old chicks. They started pecking viciously so now she is in separate box with 3 day old chicks.
