Opening nesting boxes to chickens

My girls are about 16 weeks how old are they before you can open up nesting boxes for them to get used to without poopin in them?

My chickens have always had open nest boxes. As long as they have roosts and the roosts are higher than the nest they should go there instead of the nests. i did have an issue with the lowest on the pecking order getting into the nests, but after several times of chasing her off, they all roost now and the nests are used only for egg laying.

mine have always been open also, just make sure, the roosts are higher, they go to the highest place they can find...they should be getting ready to lay in the next month....so get ready!

Open the nest boxes, shouldn't have a problem with poop.
