Hello all!

I'm a wildlife rehabber, and today I got an interesting, not-quite-wildlife call. Apparently there are some chickens free ranging on a couple's property, and said couple are now too old to care for these chickens and want them off the property. They even threatened that they might shoot them if no one would take them. Being a big chicken lover, of course I sprang into action and have some plans to take these fifteen to twenty (or so) chickens and find them new homes! I'll be initially visiting the property on Wednesday morning and checking out the situation and birds, and catching as many as I can then, and then returning on Friday with more people to hopefully get the rest of the birds.

As of right now, I am uncertain about what breed these birds are or any of the details, but I'll have that information on Wednesday. I'll take some photos of the birds then, too, and post them here.

What I have to ask to you is: Would you maybe want some chickens? They'll most likely be free or have a very small adoption fee, they're likely all or mostly adults. I'm in Penn Valley, which is about an hour from Sacramento. Anyone in Nevada City/Grass Valley, Auburn, Roseville, Rocklin, Sacramento, or surrounding areas, we could likely work out transportation of these birds. If you're even farther away but would want some, we might be able to work that out, too! Of course I will be checking their health when I get them, but they should probably be quarantined away from existing flocks like any adult bird just in case. Let me know if you might be interested in taking some, and where you're located.

Once I have the birds, I will be trying to find them homes here on the forums and on Craigslist. There is one special-needs bird who has only one leg, and assuming it's in decent health I would like to see it go to a home as a pet.

Just thought I'd post about my interesting little "project"! Like I said, I'll post more information when I have it.

I can try to help. I am in west point, about an hour and a half east of sac. I have a lot going on right now, but let me know when you have more info and I'll see what I can do.

I could offer to help with transportation / trying to find homes but can't take any more chickens. I also have a 5' x5'x3' PVC/chicken wire enclosure that I can donate. It is a bit worn and not predator proof and does not have a coop / house attached. So it needs a secure / weather proof coop to make it predator proof. I am in the Bay Area.

Thanks to all for offering to help! I checked out the situation today, and these are some very lovely birds. The only thing is, they're very wild and difficult to catch! Even when roosting, they're too high up and in too dense of foliage to get access to them. Therefore, the woman working together with me (she's the neighbor of the original owner of the chickens) is going to start feeding them only inside her dog kennel and see if she can close the door on them and catch them that way. Hopefully it'll work! At an absolute minimum, we want to get the hens out of there so they can't continue breeding and breeding. I would like to get as many of the birds as possible, though--the roosters are gorgeous, and I don't want anyone getting shot.

I will post with any birds we manage to catch!

Rooster at Marin Humane has 5 day limit

Thursday, September 13, 2012 6:46 PM

I tried to help a rooster who lived in the Community Gardens in SF and so I exported him to Marin Humane. I didn't realize that Roosters are banned in SF, Marin and S Rosa. I left him at Marin Humane for their 5 days while I try to figure out something. I have created bad karma, in a kind of way. He is 6 months young, born in April and does not yet have spurs and I didn't hear any crowing while I drove him to Marin. Apparently he doesn't crow much... yet. I think he is a Plymoth Rock black and white feathered Rooster.

Do you have any suggestions for placement close to SF or Marin County ?

Sincerely,

You'll have better response posting in the "where am I" section for that area. Also try craigslist, etc.

Unfortunately, not a lot of folks want roosters. Many roosters just wind up as dinner.
