Hello all!
I'm a wildlife rehabber, and today I got an interesting, not-quite-wildlife call. Apparently there are some chickens free ranging on a couple's property, and said couple are now too old to care for these chickens and want them off the property. They even threatened that they might shoot them if no one would take them. Being a big chicken lover, of course I sprang into action and have some plans to take these fifteen to twenty (or so) chickens and find them new homes! I'll be initially visiting the property on Wednesday morning and checking out the situation and birds, and catching as many as I can then, and then returning on Friday with more people to hopefully get the rest of the birds.
As of right now, I am uncertain about what breed these birds are or any of the details, but I'll have that information on Wednesday. I'll take some photos of the birds then, too, and post them here.
What I have to ask to you is: Would you maybe want some chickens? They'll most likely be free or have a very small adoption fee, they're likely all or mostly adults. I'm in Penn Valley, which is about an hour from Sacramento. Anyone in Nevada City/Grass Valley, Auburn, Roseville, Rocklin, Sacramento, or surrounding areas, we could likely work out transportation of these birds. If you're even farther away but would want some, we might be able to work that out, too! Of course I will be checking their health when I get them, but they should probably be quarantined away from existing flocks like any adult bird just in case. Let me know if you might be interested in taking some, and where you're located.
Once I have the birds, I will be trying to find them homes here on the forums and on Craigslist. There is one special-needs bird who has only one leg, and assuming it's in decent health I would like to see it go to a home as a pet.
Just thought I'd post about my interesting little "project"! Like I said, I'll post more information when I have it.
