Opinions on Breeding this Buff Silkie

I hatched this lone buff silkie on New Years Eve. I had to help him hatch and didn't think he'd make it. Needless to say, he is very special to me. I THOUGHT he was a she until he crowed the other day. My original plan was to put "her" in with my PQ silkies, but now that he is crowing I can't do that because I already have a PQ roo and I only want one in that coop. So, my dh is building a BBS breeding coop/run and we thought maybe we'd make a part of it for buff silkies and get him a few nice quality girlfriends. Here's the question: Do you think he is OK to breed? I know he isn't SQ, but what about BQ? He is only 3 months, so I don't know how much you can tell at this point but any opinions are very much appreciated.

Pam, Im not up on the silkie standard (gotta get on that) but 3 months is still kinda early (in my opinion) I hope someone who is more knowledgeable with silkies will chime in. Who is he from?

Looks like he will have a nice crest. His color is clear, wings are tight. Nice foot feathering. 4th and 5th toe could be split more. But, other than the toes he looks pretty nice to me. Of course they can change drastically as they mature. I would watch him for a couple of more months and see how he looks when he is mature.

Celtic Hill, I purchased the eggs from Steve Wheat on BYC. Oh, and it was my fault only one hatched....one of my cats knocked the incubator down.

It was HORRIBLE! I plan to get more eggs from Steve once the weather stays warmer.

Elite, I really appreciate your reply. Sounds like he is decent shape so far.

I REALLY hope I can keep him and breed some buffs. I will keep an eye on him over the next couple months.

Yeah!! I was gunna say bring him to a show once he's a little older and you can get some opinion from judges. I think if you give this guy some more time he will shape up.

I hope so!!! He is so special to me! SO SPECIAL that I'm going to breed buffs and build a separate area for them just to keep him!!! Haha.
