Opinions on Fencing Please...

We just purchased tonight our (6') 2 x 4 welded wire and (48") 1/2 inch hardware cloth tonight. We have the trench dug down 2 ft and planned on placing the hardware cloth in the trench and then 2 ft up the welded wire. The posts are pressure treated 4 x 4's and planned on them being on the inside part of the pen (easier to mow the outside pen area).

Are you saying it is better to run the hardware cloth on the "inside" of the welded wire and not the outside?

It will work either way.
And you could have just laid it on the ground instead of doing all the digging.

Nothing wrong with the outside if that's the way you've already done it -- it's just that if you put it on the inside it is less apt to get damaged by the occasional ambitious/frustrated predator. Not a big deal, though, and not a security issue.

Good luck, have fun,

I use chicken wire and have electric wire going around the outside of my coop, run and their yard. I hope this may help also. One night I was outside on my back patio which faces my chickens. I heard a really good "OUCH" scream like sound. Something came into contact with the electric wire. It's 6000 volts. I have gotten quite shocked by it myself so I imagine an animal who weighs far less than I really gets a good zap. I doubt it will be back. Some of these pictures are older pictures. I put the electric wire up initially because I believe it was a dog by the tracks, dug under my fence and killed one of my hens.

If you have a Lowes vs HD. Lowes sells a better welded wire than HD. Comes from a different part of China probably. Gauge is the same but the welds are better. They also have a 3" high 1 x 2 and a 2x3 if that's what you crave. Running a real strong tension wire right on the ground and stretching it real tight then hog tying the bottom strand of welded wire to it really adds to strength.

Lowes has nicer bathrooms too.
