I am looking for opinions and info on guineas. It seems that people either love them or hate them. We live on 48 acres, most of that hillside and the deer come through here regularly = ticks. The dog is picking them up (even with Frontline plus) and I have read that guineas will eat ticks. Hubby says no - 'they are ugly and noisy'. Yes I understand they are vocal and I don't care about "ugly".

I am already listening to neighbor peafowl, although those are a distance away.

For those of you with guineas, is it possible to raise them and release them on the hill? I can provide shelter and food away from the house. Wondering if they go 'wild' if they stick around or do they disappear. Would they rather roam largely untouched acreage or hang out on top of the house and barn?

They get attached to an area. They will go on top of your car and can scratch the paint. The care required would be the same as a chicken (feed, water, close coop at night, clean coop). Some do like to roost in trees but they mostly like a coop. They are really loud when making an attack call. They hide nests all over so if you are looking for eggs to hatch you have to search. They are really good at killing snakes as well as efficient bug killers. They do not bode well being moved from one place to another close once they are grown, they will go back to the original place if you just move down the street. Keep them locked in a coop or enclosure for a week before releasing them on your property for free ranging so they know their area. On small lots (I know yours isn't) they can go to a neighbors house. They are really a love or hate thing but there are very few things that can achieve the reduction of ticks and snakes like them.
