Opinions on roost size.

I have a 2x4 laying flat for a roost. Every night I move them from piece of T111 which is about a half inch thick to the 2x4. Cant believe they wrap their big feet on such a tiny piece of wood. Cant be comfortable. Should I cut the 2x4 in half? Any opinions? Roost is even higher than the T111 which is part of a nesting box.

Can you flip it on edge so they can stand on the skinny side?

Also they should prefer which ever is higher so if the part of the nest boxes they are using is currently higher than the roost, elevating the roost should encourage them.
