Well, I am now certain that it was a possum that got our 5 chicks almost a couple months ago (for those that read my other post). We've been coming home late this week and I have been locking all the girls up every night since we lost the chicks. Well, the 3 pullets we have left from our MPC batch, which are 11 weeks old now, get locked up in the shed just for extra security. I have latches on the small coop nesting box lid now but the thing I've been doing is leaving it unlatched in a way where I can tell if something opens it during the night. I noticed last night for the first time since I had the latches installed and pullets kept elsewhere that the lid was opened... Well, we came home tonight and I went out to lock the chickens up and heard a rustling... Sure as crap, possum climbing back up the tree. Probably figuring out how to get in the small coop. Couldn't get a clean shot off with my pellet rifle before it disappeared behind limbs and leaves.

Just wanted to share that... I know everyone was adamant about it being a raccoon, but I'm positive that it was that possum that I scared away this evening. Are they that dexterous with their hands to lift a lid and grab a 3-4 week old chick?

Anyway, thanks for reading...

What their "hands" look like.

Opossum really aren't diggers. They have soft "hands" similar to us. They are opportunistic though, so if another animal is digging they will try to use that. A live animal trap is pretty easy to use to catch them. Like the size of one you would use to catch a cat. If you get one be prepared to hear a lot of hissing and growling. They are pretty timid animals but when they are scared they will make those noises. I hope it stays away! My guess is that it has found your coop is a source of food and will keep coming back!
