Two days ago we lost several chicks to a raccoon. We've patched up the problem and I was sent to L&M to purchase "replacements".
They were very busy and a little granny needed help and I was in a HURRY. I love chickens - don't much care what kind. At this age they are all adorable anyways, right? One bin was labeled "Assorted crested" and "Sultans" It wasn't on the list - but I love their "hair" and on a whim I said "And one of those little black and white guys".
So... What IS this? I didn't hand pick the chick. It doesn't appear to have a crest (yet?) but has muffs! He's the same size as the smallest Seabright I picked up (they did not have anything about bantams on the bin) has got yellow legs with A LOT of feathering and 4 toes on each foot. I'm not sure where L&M gets their chicks here, but the last batch we had two D'uccles - a female with 4 toes per foot and a male with 5. Last year nearly 1/4 of the birds we special ordered were not the breeds we'd asked for. We liked them just fine - I'm always fine with a surprise anyways! But, point being - I never REALLY know what I'm getting down there.
