Utter excitement at nearly 3 in the morning. I finally decided that I would place an order at with Meyer Hatchery. It won't be getting delivered until the second week in June, but I am still excited! After reading all the reviews of the hatcheries, I thought Meyer fit the bill the best. It is closer than Cackle, much means a slightly lower shipping cost and hopefully less time in transit for the chicks.
The only chickens my parents wanted were half a dozen meat birds for their coop. So I ordered them dark cornish cockerels! And I actually got them 11, since 1-10 cost 2.10 each, while 11 cost 1.10. Yea, buying in bulk is always a better deal, and I know the extras won't be minded at all.
For myself I ordered all pullets for laying. A small group of salmon faverolles, a small group of easter eggers "Ameraucanas", a pair of hamburgs (one gold spangled and one silver spangled), a speckled sussex, a black australorp, and lastly, a blue laced red Wyandotte! Not only was I interested in having a beautiful, diverse flock, but also a colorful egg basket too. I'm also a sucker for naming things, so being able to tell them all apart makes that job so much easier. Four months is a long time to wait, but at least I will be getting what I want. Though I bet even if I ordered only a few weeks in advance, most, if not all, would be available anyway, but I like having one foot in the door
