Hi guys,

Has anyone here tried making their own organic homemade quail chick feed?
Can anyone help me with what the ingredients would look like? I'm from the UK and i currently cannot find any organic starter crumbs for quail. There are some Turkey starters available, but all currently out of stock and they only sell in bulk :(

Thanks for the help.

It will be very difficult and probably expensive to make homemade quail food even more so if you want it organic, I mix my own food for my mice so I know how difficult mixing feed is, you will probably need to add mealworms or something like that, I have never seen organic bugs or mealworms so I don’t know if they are a thing or not.

Here’s something on the nutritional needs of quail it might help

In case you are still looking for premade food heres what I feed

And when I can get it, it is better then the one above but it is seasonal

And good luck with making your own feed:thumbsup

Thanks for that SpotTheCat

That document from 'worldscientificnews.com is helpful.
Yes, it does seem like its tedious to put together though.

I've looked at the turkey starter crumb before, but its seasonal :(

What do you think if i get this and grind it?

Did you have a look at the turkey grower/finisher? it would need grinding if you want to feed it to chicks

That would be okay until you can find something better
Do you need it for chicks, adults or both?
most important things to look for in the feed is the percentage of
Lysine
Methionine
Protein
Calcium
Remember no matter how much protein the feed has if it does not have enough lysine and methionine then it wont really do anything, 16% protein is the lowest I would go for adult quail*, you probably want closer to 18-20% for chicks, 17% will probably work but is not the best.
For chicks, not laying hens and roos you don’t want the calcium content to be too hight, that food should be fine but all was remember to check the the percentage of the calcium in the feed, some feeds I found had to much calcium even though they weren’t labelled for laying hens.
That feed is a bit low on both lysine and methionine but if you can’t find any other feed it should work.

* when I say quail I mean Cortunix quail
