An orphaned week old (approx) duckling ran up to us in a parking lot, no other ducks in sight. We brought him home with us,and it's been about 3 days now. I've raised Muscovies at my previous house, so I know all about feeding, care, etc so please just need advice about giving it a buddy. I'm thinking about buying a duckling from the feed store, but the owner of another feed store told me he wouldn't advise mixing a captive bred duckling with a wild one, because the wild one could spread a disease. This little duckling I have appears to be very healthy and hearty. Eats, plays, drinks, waddles bright eyes, healthy beak and feet. I'm prepared to build a very nice habitat 10x30 feet, with edible plants and a filtered fish pond that I will install once they've feathered out) where they can live their lives.
What do y'all think? How do I get him a buddy? He has imprinted on us but he needs a ducky friend.

There is a risk of disease, even if you can't see it. I learned that the hard way. We can't always see parasites, bacteria, or viruses.

That being said, your duckling will do better with a friend. And I might take the risk of getting him one, even with my unfortunate experience. I would probably get him a muscovy friend of the same age.

And yes, please post a photo of your baby. 🙂
