hi, my first chick has just hatched from my trio of L/F pure black orpingtons but has come out mostly brown. it is now just over a week old and has started growing its feathers which are also coming through brown. has anyone any idea why it is this colour. no other cockerel can get into the breeding pen.

I have been told this happens in Black breeds of birds. It's called a brown recessive gene, somewhere down the lineage of your blacks someone added a different colored bird to add a trait or type.

I had this show up twice now in my Blacks from the BBS Orp pen.

Read this posting it may help.
