Been doing chickens for years but had to step back for awhile and now I'm back. My new project is BBS Orpingtons and trying to learn as much as i can about them. Which produces more eggs? Been reading that through the years the appearance has been concentrated on and egg production has suffered because of it. American Std Vs. English standards. Comparing the two there is a noticable difference. Why did the standards go the direction they did. It started off being an English breed so why should the American version look so different? Also would an English Orpington be disqualified because of the American standards?

From what I know, the American birds should produce more than the English ones. When orpingtons were first brought to America breeders crossed them to Plymouth rocks and wyndottes, to improve laying but this changed their shape. I think you can enter English orps in shows in America but you have to enter them in the non standard breeds sections.

I have both English and American lines. The APA shows I have entered classify Orpingtons as English and both the imported and American lines compete against each other. They are judged based on SOP, so whichever measures up, wins. I have seen examples at shows of scrawny hatchery Orpingtons being beaten by imported type as well as American type winning over imported birds, so who wins really depends on the individual bird being compared, not to each other, but to the Standard of Perfection.

Before this resurrected old thread gets too far afield with guesswork and possible inaccuracies, I'd highly suggest you invite thedragonlady, Vickie, to share on this topic. She's quite knowledgeable.

I also invite you over to read the unit on Orpingtons that was done recently at CSU, Chicken State University thread. It begins here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/732985/csu-chicken-state-university-large-fowl-sop/840

All these matters were covered accurately and thoroughly in that Orp unit.
