other animals killing chooks

we have had tow chooks die because of snakes. it was really bad news.

we have got a snake scarer but I want to get other ideas.

you can post other problems with other animals.
it is sad to have a chook die

but let there be a bit of fun. lets get started.

Do you let them free range? What kind of snakes? Maybe a run with tight fencing - like 1/4" hardware cloth sides, top and bottom and around all gates or openings would keep them out. Years ago someone said they used poultry wire on the ground and rolled it out like a slinky toy. The snakes would try to get throw the small openings and get caught up and die there. They said then other scavengers would eat them off the wire.

we did let them run around a bit. we used to have two big rock piles and that's were we found them dead. but we do not have the rock piles any more but still find snakes.
