our 3 month old chicks are dying! Deer flies?

Thanks again for all the good advice, I will let you know tomorrow if the rest survive, we have two that are looking bleak right now, but I did manage to get them to drink. Not one of our chicks was interested in the scrambled eggs though?

I hope they turn around for you now that you have them in the house.

Treehugger - where are you from? I didn't realize the three of us were so close. I have been getting bitten too. Are our six week old chicks safe? They are spending their first night in the coop. I thought they might be old enough to eat the gnats that bother them?

You are welcome to my australorp cockerel if you need him. We live in the burbs and shouldn't keep a rooster.

Hi All! We did not lose any more chickens

We are keeping them in the basement until the gnat season is over, hopefully that will be very soon. We tried the vanilla yesterday when we were trying to plant the last of our garden and it seemed to help, but had to reapply pretty often. I even put some vanilla scented candles on the porch so we could sit out there when we were taking breaks. If anyone hears of anyone giving chickens away we would love some full grown ones for eggs right now. Thanks again for all of the advice Saturday. Kathleen

I just lost 9 Isa Brown chicks that are 6 1/2 weeks old. I am near certain now that it was the buffalo gnats as they are horrible right now. I live in SE Illinois.I had them outside for less that 12 hours and they were gone. Bad part is that I have other slightly older chicks that are fighting with the gnats also. I have put up a bug light and a fan to blow on them. I noticed that when I was out in the open during a breezy day, the gnats weren't as bad.
