Sasha just turned 4 months old. She is one of 10 hens (and 2 roosters). She is one of our smaller hens. She is a comet, standard size. Her eggs are medium sized. A friend told me to be careful that they don't lay eggs under the porch. It's pretty dark under there and we can't see that far back. We have 3 nesting boxes. The chickens free range for most of the day, which is my next question... will the hen leave the yard and go into the coop in the nesting boxes to lay or will they just find a comfy spot in the yard or woods or under the deck??? Any info greatly appreciated!

They need to be fenced in to know where you want them to lay eggs. If they free range, thats what they do they want to find their place to lay eggs. Keep them fence for a while and lets hope later they will remember to go to their nesting box.

what breed is your chicks.I have buff ophantons that are14 weeks old and i am getting excited to see a egg.

The one that is laying is a red comet.... Maybe gold comet. We also have 2 buff orpintons, 2 barred rocks, 3 rhode island reds, and 3 nh reds. Only the comets are doing their egg song and squatting.
