Hi. I'm new here. I joined to share a story and to just hang out/haha. Here is my story: Our banty hen (Silver Spangled Hamburg) suddenly stopped eating or drinking, plus she had diarrhea, her vent was plugged and she would just sit on the hay all day. We quarantined her. We didn't do much of anything for a couple of days as we are new to chickens. Finally, we fed her water with an eye dropper and she was very very thirsty by the time we did do that. She opened her beak like a little robin begging for water.
I had thought there was no hope but our vet, who is not an avian vet, wanted to try to save her. She (the vet) first soaked her in warm water in case of an egg being stuck (she also took an xray and no egg was stuck) but the soak also cleaned up her butt area. Then she pumped the goop out of her crop. She thought maybe it was impacted, but she isn't sure. Then we brought her home and she advised us to feed her some unpasteurized apple cider vinegar (ACV) in her water, plus she also wanted us to feed her a tiny amount of her mate's poop in water "to reset her probiotics" (but at a separate time from the vinegar treatment). It's been 9 days and our hen seems just fine. She is eating scrambled egg, watermelon, chicken feed and she hops around lively and happy. I am shocked our chicken is ok! The vet isn't sure which treatment did the trick, but now I mix a tablespoon of raw ACV in a gallon of water and use it for all the chickens. I think it helps prevent bacterial growth in the water, thereby keeping them healthier. I read it is an old farmer trick.
I'm just sharing this story in case your chicken stops eating or drinking and you need to "try something" as this did work this time. Whew!!
